De Potes a Piedrasluengas.
    Chapel of Guadalupe
(Cabezón de Liébana)
An alternative route from Potes is to enter Cabezón de Liébana Valley, watershed of the river Bullón, from which one can reach the mountain pass of Piedras Luengas connecting Liébana with Palencia. A few kilometres from Potes, after Frama, there is a turning to Cambarco, Luriezo, Chaecho, Aniezo, etc.; very interesting villages for their well-preserved popular architecture and their churches, 17th and 18th century buildings with small high quality altarpieces. The Cantabrian-Roman estela on the frontispiece of the church of Luriezo is outstanding. Returning to the road towards the mountain pass, and after Cabezón de Liébana, where the Baroque churches of El Carmen and Guadalupe stand, one can take a turn to Piasca, where the Romanesque church of Santa María is located, a church which was built in an ancient 9th century monastery having both nuns and monks under the order of San Fructuoso with an abbess as head. The interesting sculpture of this church, linked with the school of Palencia, is one of the best in Cantabria.

Finally, getting into the district of Pesagüero in Valdeprado or Vendejo, among others, there are 18th century casonas with high quality coats of arms on their façade.
