CONGRESS: WHEC 2018 – June 17 – 22, 2018

Alfredo Ortiz and Daniel Gorri attended the 22nd World Hydrogen Energy Conference (WHEC2018), celebrated in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) last June 17-22,2018, where they presented the works “Contribution of upcycling surplus hydrogen to design a sustainable supply chain: The case study of Northern Spain”.

 

 

PhD. THESIS DEFENSE – June 20th, 2018

Antoniel Carlos Carolino Campos defended his doctorate thesis “Poly(urethane-urea) composite membranes with Ag Np/activator and AgBF4/BMImBF4 systems for light olefins/paraffins separations”, developed in the Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Department of the University of Cantabria (Spain) and in the Instituto de Química of the Universidades do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). The event took place in Rio de Janeiro  last June 20th. Dr. Alfredo Ortiz and Dr. Daniel Gorri, on behalf of the Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Department, attended the defense.

The evalution committe was formed by Prof. Dr. Rodrigo Azevedo dos Reis (UERJ), Dr. Alfredo Ortiz (UC), Dr. Daniel Gorri (UC), Prof. Dr. Márcio Luis Lyra Paredes (PPGEQ/IQ/UERJ), Prof. Dr. Alberto Claudio Habert (PEQ/COPPE/UFRJ), Prof. Dr. Helen Conceição Ferraz (PEQ/COPPE/UFRJ) and Prof. Dr. Karim Dahmouche (IMA/UFRJ).

RESEARCH VISIT: Dr. Lucía Gómez – June 18-22, 2018

Dr. Lucía Gómez, researcher of GRADISAL Project at the Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Department of the University of Cantabria, visited the Electrochemistry and Corrosion Resarch Group of the Polytechnic University of Valencia. During her visit, from June 18th to 22nd, 2018, she had the opportunity of being trained in membrane characterization by using electrochemical techniques, under the supervision of Prof. Valentin Perez Herranz.

DOCTORATE SEMINARS – June 14-15, 2018

The Chemical, Energy and Process Engineering Doctorate program organized the annual Doctorate seminars. The aim of the seminar is to promote the training of PhD students and disseminate their research activities. The seminar, open to the members of the doctorate program and to general public, included the assessment of the doctorate students’ progress by the academic panel of supervisors. The event took place last June 14th and 15th, 2018, in lecture room #03 of the ETSIIT (UC) and was structured in the following sections:

SPORTS AWARDS 2018

Alba Romano won the silver medal in the 2017-2018 Torneo Campeón de Centros in Women´s Badminton competition, representing the ETSIIT of the  University of Cantabria. Alba Romano is Master in Chemical Engineering and she is currently enrolled in the doctorate program in Chemical, Energy and Process Engineering of the UC.

ECO-DESIGN EXHIBITION – June 11th, 2018

Students of the Master in Chemical Engineering enrolled in the course Life Cycle Assessment of Processes and Products showed their works in the hall of the ETSIIyT of the University of Cantabria last June 11th, 2018. The students used eco-design strategies and tools in their works to propose newly eco-designed products.

It was a very good opportunity to acknowledge their creativity and learn the concepts applied to products eco-design!

NEW STAFF: Andrea Arguillarena – June 11th, 2018

Andrea Arguillarena, Master in Chemical Engineering (UC-UPV/EHU), has joined the Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Department at the University of Cantabria, as research staff in the european project “LIFE-2-ACID”, under the supervision of Prof. Ane Urtiaga.

CONGRESS: SPEA 10 – June 4-8, 2018

María José Rivero, Juan Corredor and Beatriz Gómez attended the 10th European meeting on Solar Chemistry and Photocatalysis: Environmental Applications (SPEA10), held in Almería, Spain, from June 4th to 8th, 2018.   Dr. María J. Rivero deliverd the lecture “Exploring crude glycerol as feedstock in the development of a realistic hydrogen production process” and the poster “Comparative Life Cycle Assessment for the Photocatalytic Treatment of Greywater”. Doctorate students Juan Corredor and Beatriz Gómez presented the posters “TiO2/rGO composites for photocatalytic hydrogen production from methanol” and “Degradation of poly- and per-fluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) from AFFF-impacted water by sequential oxidative/reductive treatments”, respectively.

DISSEMINATION ACTIVITIES IN PRIMARY SCHOOL – June 2018

Elena Manteca and Gema Pérez participated in the event Science Day (“Jornada de la Ciencia”) organized by the CEIP Sardinero. During the day, the students of 4th, 5 th and 6 th levels of Primary School participated in different  workshops in the field of chemistry, maths and geology. Elena and Gema were in charge of the Chemistry Workshop. They showed the students  how they daily work at the lab is, and some experiments and analysis about water treatment and reuse were performed.

VISIT TO HIDRÓGENA – June 7th, 2018

Alfredo Ortiz, Rafael Ortiz and Sergio San Martín visited the Company Hidrógena, located in Segovia (Spain) last June 7th, 2018. Hidrógena is the supplier of the electrolyzer that will be used for hydrogen production testing, within the European project HYLANTIC.

After visiting the company’s facilities and the products that are currently under production, the supplied electrolyzer was adjusted to the project demands and the researchers were trained by the expert manufacturer to use it.
