SCIENCE WEEK 2017

The Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department participated in the Science Week 2017 organized by the University of Cantabria.

On November 10th, 2017 we received in our Department 21 students from the high school Maria Telo located in Los Corrales de Buelna.

On November 17th, 2017 we received in our Department the visit of 21 students of the school Jardín de Africa (Santander).

During the visit they put hands on different experiments and techniques in the lab and visited our facilities. They removed copper from contaminated waters, synthetized membranes for medical applications and checked the operation mode of the Chem car, among other topics.

 

PROJECT MEETING – November 2017

Last November 9th, 2017 the meeting of the project “Estrategias avanzadas de integración de membranas y procesos electrocatalíticos y fotocatalíticos para la eliminación de contaminantes persistentes (CTM2016-75509-R)” took place, with the participation of Dr. Oana David, from Tecnalia and Prof. Ane Urtiaga and Dr. Nazely Diban, from the University of Cantabria.

NEW STAFF: Carla Arregoitia

Carla Arregoitia, Master in Chemical Engineering, has recently joined the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department of the University of Cantabria, where she will work in the project “Membranas Compuestas Selectivas y su Incorporación en Dispositivos Microfluídicos”, under the supervision of Dr. Daniel Gorri and Dr. Marcos Fallanza.

RESEARCH STAY AT UC: Lamia Bennabi

Dr. Lamia Bennabi, teacher researcher at the University Ibn Khaldun of Tiaret in Algeria has performed a research visit of 15 days of duration from 24th October to 7th November 2017 at the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department of the University of Cantabria as follow-up of the research collaboration initiated 2 years ago on the preparation and characterization of biocompatible polymer microspheres for controlled drug release.

NEW FULL PROFESSOR: Raquel Ibáñez – October 30th, 2017

Last October 30th, 2017, Raquel Ibáñez was proposed for recruitment as Full Professor by the evaluation committee formed by Prof. Javier León (Vice-chancellor of Research at UC) Prof. Ángel Irabien (University of Cantabria), Prof. Ane Urtiaga (University of Cantabria), Prof. Juan José Rodríguez Jiménez (Autonomous University of Madrid) and Prof. Javier Bilbao (University of the Basque country).

DOCTORATE SEMINAR – October 2017

Antoniel Carlos Campos Carolina, Jenifer Gómez Pastora, Ana Hernández Pellón and Saúl Laguillo Revuelta, PhD. students of the Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Department, attended the Advanced Doctorate Seminar “Curso Avanzado sobre el Futuro Profesional del Doctorando” organized the Doctorate School of the University Cantabria (EDUC), last October 16-27, 2017.

SOLVAY-UC MEETING – October 30th, 2017

Prof. Inmaculada Ortiz and Prof. Ane Urtiaga, on behalf of the Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Department, attended the meeting between the company Solvay and some leaders of the research groups of the University of Cantabria whose main activity is related to the Company interests, last October 26th, 2017.  The event, organized by Foro UC-Empresa and coordinated by Vicerrectorado de Investigación, was aimed at the promotion of the relationship between UC and Solvay.

Inmaculada Ortiz, head of the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department was in charge of the presentation of the main research topics in which are involved the 4 research groups of the Department.

ACADEMIC VISIT: Yamaguchi University Students – October 2017

Students from the University of Yamaguchi within their supervisor Dr. Izumi Kumakiri are visiting the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department of the University in the frame of a collaboration project between both institutions. During the visit, from October 23rd to November 20th, 2017 they will have the opportunity to jointly work with PhD. students of the Department in different research fields; they will visit and put hands on the facilities and share different experiences in a different culture.

SEMINAR AND TRAGUA MEETING – October 2017

Ane Urtiaga and Gema Pérez attended the Days “Gestión de las Aguas regeneradas mediante recarga inducida y artificial. Aspectos ambientales, socioeconómicos y legales”, organized by Club del Agua Subterránea, Instituto Geológico y Minero de España, Fundación Fomento y Gestión del Agua, Grupo Especializado del Agua, IMDEA Agua and Consolider TRAGUA. The event took place at Fundación Gómez Pardo in Madrid last October 18 – 19th, 2017.

During the celebration of this event the third meeting of the Consolider-Tragua net, TRAGUANET took place in Madrid. TRAGUANET is a scientific network financed by MINECO and formed by 23 research groups of different Universities and Research Centres with main research interest oriented to wastewater treatment and reuse.

The aim of the meeting was to present the conclusions of the Project corresponding to the period 2014-2017.
