CONGRESS: IBERCONAPPICE 2017 – October 17-20, 2017

Alfredo Ortiz Sainz de Aja participated in the Ibero-American Congress on Hydrogen and Fuel Cells – IBERCONAPPICE 2017 held in Huesca last October 17-20,  2017, where he presented the work “Supply chain optimization of hydrogen recovery from industrial gaseous waste streams at SUDOE region.”

CHEM-E-CAR Competition – October 2017

The team of students of the Degree in Chemical Engineering of Universidad de Cantabria participated in the Chem-E-Car competition that took place on 1st October within the World Congress of Chemical Engineering in Barcelona from 1st to 5th October, 2017.

The success of the Cantabrian expedition was acknowledged with the award to the “Best Inherent Safety in Design of Car”), which reveals the excellent work carried out by the team of students.

18 teams from different countries, like Canada, Iran, Qatar, Poland, United States or Spain, were able to finally take part in the competition. The car “CantabriCar” of UC achieved the best place among the Spanish teams that participated in the event, and the sixth place in the global ranking of the competition. The winner of the contest was the prototype of the team from the Persian Gulf University (Iran), which was able to place the vehicle only 0,6 cm away from the target distance of 21 m, showing the extraordinarily high level of the participants.

The team has been supervised by a groups of professors from the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and it has been financially supported by the company Birla Carbon Spain, which made the dream of taking part in this competition a reality.

CONGRESS: WCCE – October 1 – 5, 2017

The 10th World Congress of Chemical Engineering in Barcelona (Spain) took place in Barcelona from October 1 to 5, 2017. A large group of delegates of the Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Department attended the event, where they presented their research. Ángel Irabien was part of the Scientific and Organizing Committee. Ane Urtiaga, María José Rivero, Manuel Alvarez, Clara Casado and Jonathan Albo participated as chairs of scientific sessions.

The congress, the most relevant in the area of ​​Chemical Engineering, brings together every four years the world’s Chemical Engineering elite. 2017 event took place in Europe and it will move to Buenos Aires in 2021 and to  Beijing in 2025.

Cristina González and Aitor Marcos received the award to distinguish the best student´s poster.

Prof. Ángel Irabien was distinguished with the Award for Excellence in the Organization of the International Conference of Sustainable Science and Engineering, ICOSSE´17, celebrated in collaboration with the British Society IChemE and the American Society AIChE. The conference was part of the 10th World Congress of Chemical Engineering which took place in Barcelona last October 1-5, 2017. Moreover, during the congress, Prof. Irabien was member of the Scientific and Organizing Committee.

Moreover, María José Rivero received the award to distinguish the best oral presentetation in the WCCC (AOPs).

EUROPEAN RESEARCHERS´NIGHT 2017 – September 29th, 2017

Last September 29th, 2017, researchers of the Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Department participated in the event “European Researchers´ Night” in Plaza Porticada in Santander, organized by the Scientific Culture and Innovation Unit of the University of Cantabria. The activity outreached the expectations and facilitate the general public to become aware of the relevance of R&D in daily life.

RESEARCH STAY: Paula Ribao – September – December 2017

Paula Ribao is performing a pre-doctoral research internship at the Laboratório Nacional de Energia e Geologia (LNEG) in Lisbon (Portugal) under the supervision of Dr. Carmen Rangel, from September to December 2017. During this period, she will work on the photocatalytic hydrogen production from model and real industrial effluents. The main objective will be to evaluate the ability of novel photocatalytic materials to obtain energy from organic wastewaters.

RESEARCH STAY: Omar González – September 2017 – March 2018

Last September 18th, we welcomed in our department Omar González coming from Aguascalientes Institute of Technology (Mexico). Omar is going to perform a 6 month research secondment in the research group “Advanced Separation Processes” under the supervision of Prof. Imnaculada Ortiz and Dr. Eugenio Bringas.

 

CHEM-E-CAR

During the morning of September 20th, 2017 the Chem-e-car team official presentation took place.

The eight students of the degree in Chemical Engineering that form the “Chem-E-Car” team are members of “Universidad de Cantabria Student Chapter of AIChE”.  The team has been supervised by professors of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, and with the financial help of the company Aditya Birla Carbon, they have been able to develop a prototype of a car that is powered and stopped by chemical reactions.

The prototype will be presented in the Chem-e-car competition that will take place next October during the 10th World Congress of Chemical Engineer in Barcelona.

RESEARCH STAY: Sandra Sánchez – September – December 2017

Sandra Sánchez is performing a research stay at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering in the University of Oxford, in the frame of a grant given by The European Molecular biology Organization (EMBO) an organization that promotes excellence in the life science. During this period, September 15th – December 15th, 2017 she will carry out biocompatibility analysis in order to demonstrate the viability of the already fabricated membranes by assays of neuronal cell culture, under the supervision of Dr. Hua Ye.

NEW STAFF: Zoila Gándara – sEPTEMBER 2017

Zoila Gándara Barreiro, doctor in organic chemistry (University of Vigo) has recently been incorporated to the Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Department to work in the project “Gradisal: Aplicación en Cantabria de la tecnología EDR (Electrodiálisis reversa) a la obtención de energía renovable marina mediante gradiente salino. Fase I: viabilidad técnico-económica (RM16-XX-046-SODERCAN-FEDER), led by Prof. Inmaculada Ortiz.

RETIREMENT & CONFERENCE – September 2017

Our colleagues Olga Oliván and Jose Antonio Otero will retire soon. Their colleagues of the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department want to acknowledge them for their dedication during these years and wish them a healthy and successful future!
