Science Week CEIP Sardinero

Elena Manteca and Gema Pérez participated in the celebration of the Science Week of the Sardinero Primary School. They organized a science show on chemical engineering. The fundamentals of chromatography analysis were explained, through a simple experiment of to separate the colors of an ink. In a second experiment, students played with the periodic table of the chemical elements, in a way to celebrate the 150 anniversary of the periodic table.

Congress

Carlos Javier Escudero, who got his PhD degree in Chemical, Energy and Process Engineering in the University of Cantabria, has participated in the XXXIV Congreso Nacional de la Sociedad Mexicana de Electroquímica 2019 & 12th Meeting of the Mexican Section of the Electrochemical Society, celebrated in Santiago de Querétaro (Mexico) last June 2-6, 2019. Dr. Escudero presented the communication “Electrochemical oxidation of two phenolic compounds: evaluation of kinetics and energy consumption”, that was developed in collaboration with our colleagues Prof. Inmacualda Ortiz and Dr. María José Rivero.

Conference: Prof. Ignacio E. Grossmann

Prof. Ignacio Grossmann, Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh, USA) – Doctor Honoris Causa in the University of Cantabria, delivered the talk “Evolución y Tendencias en la Educación Universitaria en los Estados Unidos”. The event took place in the  ETSIIT of the University of Cantabria on May 29th, 2019. This event was organized by the Master in Chemical Engineering and the Doctorate Program in Chemical, Energy and Process Engineering.

Conference: Dra. Aleksandra Pacula

Dra. Aleksandra Pacula, researcher at the Jerzy Haber Institute of Catalysis and Surface Chemistry, Polish Academy of Science, delivered the conference “Porous N-doped carbon materials and their composites”. The conference took place on May 27th, 2019 in the Sala de Grados of the ETSIIT. This activity took place in the frame of the Master in Chemical Engineering and the Doctorate Program in Chemical, Energy and Process Engineering.

Congress: SETAC

Andrea Arguillarena is attending the SETAC Europe 29th Annual Meeting in Helsinki (Finland) from May 26-30, 2019, where she presents the work «Life Cycle Assessment of hot-dip galvanising process».

Seminars: Prof. Ignacio E. Grossmann

Prof. Ignacio Grossmann is visiting the Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Department. Prof. Grossmann is Doctor Honoris Causa in the University of Cantabria and Rudolph R. and Florence Dean University Professor of Chemical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University (USA). During his stay at UC, he delivered two seminars, organized by AQUIQÁN. The seminar “Mixed-integer programming models for planning and scheduling for Enterprise-wide optimization”, took place on May 23rd, 2019. The second one, entitled “Optimization of process systems under uncertainty”, took place on May 24th, 2019.

Conference: Prof. Inmaculada Ortiz

Prof. Inmaculada Ortiz Uribe took part in the cycle of conferences “Ciencia para todos” organized by the Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences, with the seminar “El valor de los residuos y el paradigma de la economía circular”. The conference has been taught on April 20, 2019 in the Main Hall of RAC in Madrid, on May 13, 2019 in the Main Hall of the Club de Prensa Asturiana in Oviedo and on May 14, 2019 in the “Casa de las Ciencias” in Logroño.

Academic Visit

Students of 4º ESO of the Atalaya School visited the Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Department. Elena Manteca and Gema Pérez welcomed them and organized two experimental activities that students developed during the whole morning, last May 17th, 2019. One experiment activity consisted on the removal of cupper from a wastewater sample by applying ion exchange technology. In the second experiment the students experimented the chromatographic separation principles by doing an experiment using cromatography paper and also they watched how an ion cromatograph works.

Academic Visit

Students of the Chemical Engineering Degree who follow the courses Wastewater Treatment, European Project Semester and Advanced Separation Processes, and the Faculty members Raquel Ibáñez, Eugenio Bringas, Marcos Fallanza and Guillermo Díaz visited the WWTP located at San Román and the Drinking water treatment Plant located in Prezanes, last May 17th, 2019.

The students had the opportunity to observe conventional and advanced technologies for the sanitation of urban and industrial wastewaters.

University of Cantabria Open Doors Day

The University of Cantabria organized the day “Feria informativa UC”, on May 10th, 2019. The aim of the event is to show the academic offer of the University of Cantabria to prospective students. During the event the 29 degrees and the 3 doubles degrees were presented. Raquel Ibáñez, Eugenio Bringas and Marcos Fallanza were in charge of explaining to the audience the academic levels in the field of Chemical Engineering, from the degree to the doctorate program.
