BSH – UC Day 2020

Alfredo Ortiz on behalf of the Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Department of the University of Cantabria, participated in the BSH-UC Day, that took place on February 12th, 2020 in the BSH facilities, located in Santander. During the day, Alfredo delivered the talks “CO emissions in a single-flame burner impinging onto a cooking pot” and “Potential of Hydrogen in the energy mix home supply”.

11F-International Day of Women and Girls in Science

Researchers of the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department delivered the talks “Atrévete a pensar como un@ ingenier@ químic@”, in the high schools of Cantabria region on the occasion of the international Day of Women and Girls in Science. Around 20 conferences were programmed.

New Staff: Sergio San Martín

Sergio San Martín, Master in Chemical Engineering, has joined the Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Department, as staff of the project: ”RETOS EN LA IMPLEMENTACIÓN DE LA FOTOCATALISIS PARA APLICACIONES MEDIOAMBIENTALES, RTI2018-099407-B-I00 (MCIU/AEI/FEDER, UE)” principal investigator: María José Rivero.

Back home: Rafael Ortiz

Rafael Ortiz is back from his predoctoral research stay at the Institut für Energie- und Klimaforschung, IEK-3: Technoökonomische Systemanalyse“ of the Research Centre «Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH”, in Germany. During this period (November 1st, 2019 to January 31st, 2020) he has been working in energy systems modelling for the estimation of hydrogen regeneration in the Atlantic area by using renewable energies, under the supervision of Martin Robinius and Heidi Heinrichs.

PhD. Thesis Defense: María Yáñez

María Yáñez defended her doctoral thesis “Hydrogen recovery from industrial waste gas streams for fuel cell application”, developed in the Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Department, supervised by Prof. Daniel Gorri and Dr. Alfredo Ortiz. The academic event took placed on January 31st, 2020 in the ETSIIT of the University of Cantabria and the evaluation committee was formed by Prof. Inmaculada Ortiz (UC), Prof. José Angel Peña (University of Zaragoza) and Prof. Luca Ansaloni (SINTEF Industry,Norway).

KET4F-GAS Visit to FCC ámbito and Dow Chemical

Last January 27, 2020, Prof. Ane Urtiaga, Dr. Fernando Pardo and Dr. Gabriel Zarca visited the hydrofluorocarbons waste treatment plant of FCC Ámbito located in Fustiñana, and the Dow Chemical facility in Ribaforada (Navarra), which formulates polyurethane precursors containing hydrofluorocarbons. These meetings were held in the framework of project #KET4F-Gas (http://www.ket4f-gas.eu).

SUDOE ENERGY PUSH Project

Alfredo Ortiz attended the seminar for beneficiaries and controllers of the projects of the 3rd call of the Interreg SUDOE Programme, that took place in Madrid last January 23rd, 2020, on behalf of Energy Push project.

Congress: V CIDIQ

Six members of the Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Department attended the V Congreso de Innovación Docente en Ingeniería Química that took place in Santiago de Compostela (Galicia) on January 22-24, 2020.

Raquel Ibañez, as president of the CODDIQ, welcomed the participants during the opening ceremony celebrated in  Pazo Fonseca. María Jose Rivero chaired the session “Software tools and CITs” and presented the talk “Experiencias en el uso de aplicaciones móviles (mobile learning) en la docencia en la Universidad de Cantabria”. Gema Pérez chaired the session “Classroom and experimental laboratories”, and presented the work “New strategies to increase the motivation of the Chemical Engineers of the future”. Guillermo Díaz Lucía Gómez and Gabriel Zarca presented the works “Bringing value to education for chemical engineers: Learning‐by‐Doing as an innovative teaching experience”; “An integral Case Study for learning Chemical Engineering” and “Enfoque multidisciplinar para la educación en sostenibilidad: realización del Trabajo Fin de Grado en el marco del European Project Semester”, respectively.

Visit: Meetings with Chemical Engineering

Students of the IES Santa Clara (Santander) visited the Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Department. Prof. Raquel Ibáñez and Dr. Eugenio Bringas welcomed the students and presented a summary on several challenging projects that involve the participation of chemical engineers. Next, the students did a guided tour to the laboratories. The visit took place on January 21st, 2020.

PhD. Thesis Defense: Marta Herrero

Marta Herrero defended her doctoral thesis “Technical and environmental feasibility of the photovoltaoic solar – electrodialysis with bipolar membranes for the production of acids and bases”, developed in the Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Department, supervised by  Prof. Raquel Ibáñez and Dr. Antonio Domínguez. The academic event took placed on January 17th, 2020 in the ETSIIT of the University of Cantabria and the evaluation committee was formed by Dorith Tavor (Sami Shamoon College of Engineering, Be’er-Sheva, Israel), Angeles Sanroman (University of Vigo) and Eugenio Bringas (University of Cantabria).
