European Researchers´Night 2021

On September 24th, 2021 the European Researchers Night is taking place in the Porticada Square (Santander). Researchers of the Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Department will be there to show you some of the research activities in which they are involve. Moreover, a workshop about the Chem-e-car developed by students of Chemical Engineering is taking place on September 24th, at the ETSIIT. New Staff: Gonzalo Moral

Sustainable membrane technology for resource recovery from wastewater: Forward osmosis and pressure retarded osmosis

Gonzalo Moral, PhD. in Chemical Engineering, has recently joined the Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Department of the University of Cantabria to work in the project “Separaciones microfluídicas de elevado rendimiento. Retos y oportunidades (RTI2018-093310-B-I00) (MCI/AEI/FEDER,UE)”, led by Prof. Inmaculada Ortiz.

Post-doctoral research stay: Lucía Gómez

Lucía Gómez is currently developing a postdoctoral research internship in the Transport Phenomena Research Center group (CEFT) at the Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto (Porto, Portugal). During the period of time, July – September 2021, she will work on hydrogen storage and release using sodium borohydride, under the supervision of Prof. Alexandra Pinto.

Doctorate Prize

Ana Hernández Pellón has been nominated to receive the outstanding doctorate prize in the area of Engineering, among thesis defend in 2019. Ana developed her doctorate thesis, entitled “Urban air concentration and deposition of manganese and physico-chemical characterization of manganese-bearing particles”, in the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Departament under the supervision of Prof. Ignacio Fernández Olmo.

European Project Semester Final Project Degree

Jose Antonio Abarca, Gloria González, Lucía Gutierrez and Jacobo Martínez, students of the European Project Semester Programme of the Chemical Engineering Degree, defended their final project on July 21st, 2021. The event took place in the room E3 of the ETSIIT and the evaluation committee was formed by Dr. Jonathan Albo, Dr. Marcos Fallanza and Dr. Gabriel Zarca.

Attracting European Funds

Alfredo Ortiz, on behalf of the Advanced Separation Research Group of the Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Depatment of the University of Cantabria attended the meeting to establish new strategic lines for attracting European funds, held between the Regional Minister of Economy and Finance and the Vice-Rector for Research of the University of Cantabria. The event took place on July 20th, 2021 and was attended by the heads of various research groups.

Conference: Dr. Pedro Castaño

Dr. Pedro Castaño, Associate Professor, Chemical Engineering, KAUST Catalysis Center, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), (Saudi Arabia), delivered the talk “Retained species on zeolite catalysts as key factor controlling sustainable processes viability, output and lifetime”. The event took place virtually on July 12th, 2021 and it was organized in the frame of the Doctorate in Chemical Engineering, Energy and Processes of the University of Cantabria.

Award: Belén García Merino

Belén García received the “Young Researcher Award to the best poster presentation” in the “18th International Conference on Nanosciences & Nanotechnologies”, for the work “Synthesys of functionalized magnetic nanoparticles for the continuouse capture and separation of target compounds”, developed under the supervision of Prof. Inmaculada Ortiz and Dr. Eugenio Bringas. The congress took place on July 6-9, 2021 in Thessaloniki (Greece).

Extracurricular Internship: Gloria González Lavín

Gloria González Lavín, student of the Degree in Chemical Engineering is developing the extracurricular internship in the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department of the University of Cantabria under the supervision of Prof. Inmaculada Ortiz and Dr. Marcos Fallanza.
