Congress: IBERCONAPPICE 2019

Alfredo Ortiz attended the scientific event Congreso Iberoamericano de Hidrógeno y Pilas de Combustible  IBERCONAPPICE 2019, held in Madrid (Spain) on October 23-25, 2019, where he presented the work “High-purity hydrogen production by PSA technology of purge gases from ammonia plants”

Research Stay: Miguel Guate and Sergio San Martín

Miguel Guate and Sergio San Martín are performing an academic exchange period at the Yamaguchi University, in Japan, from September to December 2019 under the supervision of Prof. Izumi Kumakiri, in the frame of the grant Erasmus+. This stays are funded by the Erasmus+ K107 International Credit Mobility, Project 2018‐1‐ES01‐KA107‐049471. Miguel is developing a pre-doctoral research stay to reinforce the internationalization of his doctoral studies in Chemical, Energy and Process Engineering in the University of Cantabria (UC), in the topic of metal catalyst deposition onto ceramic supports. Sergio is developing an internship as part of the training activities as student of the Master degree in Chemical Engineering of the UC, in the topic of “Hydrogen strategic roadmaps: A comprehensive comparison of Japan and the UE”.

New Staff: Daniel González

The Chemical Engineer Daniel González Revuelta has joined the Chemical & Biomoelcular Engineering Department to work in the project Membranas compuestas selectivas y su incorporación en dispositivos microfluídicos (AEI/FEDER, UE), whose main researcher is Prof. Daniel Gorri.

Kick-off meeting: XMEM

The project X-MEM, coordinated by Dr. Nazely Diban, from the Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Department of the UC, held its kick-off meeting last October 18th, 2019 in Santander. The consortium is formed by researchers from Yamaguchi University in Japan, Jerzy Haber Institute of Catalysis and Surface Chemistry in Poland, Ege University, Atilim University and Hacettepe University, the three of them located in Turkey.

XMEM is a project funded by EIG Concert Japan – Connecting and Coordinating European Research and Technology Development with Japan and it aims at developing new separation processes and catalytic processes with biomedical and environmental applications and renewable energy production based on new materials of functionalized membranes.

Professional Promotion: Alfredo Ortiz

On October 17th, 2019, Alfredo Ortiz was promoted to Associate Professor in the area of Chemical Engineering. The evaluation committee was chaired by Dr. Mario Mañana Vice-Chancellor for Campus, Services and Sustainability of the UC, with the participation of Prof. Juan Ramón González (University of the Basque Country), Prof. Jesús María Araúzo ( University of Zaragoza), and Prof. Inmaculada Ortiz and María José Rivero, from the University of Cantabria.

New Staff: Salvador Asensio

Salvador Asensio Delgado has joined the Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Department of the University of Cantabria, as FPU Grant holder funded by the Ministry of Science (Spain). He will develop his PhD in the topic “Development of key enabling technologies for the regeneration of fluorinated gases and mitigation of their environmental impact”, under the supervision of Prof. Ane Urtiaga and Dr. Gabriel Zarca.

New Head of the Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Department

Prof. Ane Urtiaga was nominated as Head of the Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Department. The event, chaired by the Rector of the University of Cantabria, Prof. Ángel Pazos, took place on October 16th, 2019. A representative group of researchers of the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department wanted to share with her this moment.

Conference

On October 15th, 2019, Dr. Haruyuki Ishii, Associate professor at the Department of Sustainable Environmental Engineering of Yamaguchi University (Japan), delivered the conference “A comprehensive introduction of emulsion polymerization from laboratory to industrial scale”. The event took place the ETSIIT of the University of Cantabria and was organized in the frame of the Master and Doctorate Programs in Chemical Engineering. Also, undergraduate students enrolled in the course Polymer Engineering had the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of emulsion polymerization from an expert in this topic.

Congress: SDEWES

María Fresnedo San Román and Claudia Solá attended the 14th Conference on Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems – SDEWES, celebrated in Dubrovnik (Croatia) last October 1-6, 2019, where they presented the works “Determination of chlorinated organic compounds and PCDD/Fs during triclosan electrochemical oxidation” and “Photocatalytic degradation of triclosan”.

Seminar & Agreements Signing

Alfredo Ortiz, as member of the consortium of the project SUDOE ENERGY PUSH, attended the meeting organized by the Interreg SUDOE Programme last October 3-4, 2019. All participants received useful advice for the project management. Furthermore, this event is considered the official beginning of the project.
