Congress: SETAC

Andrea Arguillarena is attending the SETAC Europe 29th Annual Meeting in Helsinki (Finland) from May 26-30, 2019, where she presents the work «Life Cycle Assessment of hot-dip galvanising process».

Seminars: Prof. Ignacio E. Grossmann

Prof. Ignacio Grossmann is visiting the Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Department. Prof. Grossmann is Doctor Honoris Causa in the University of Cantabria and Rudolph R. and Florence Dean University Professor of Chemical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University (USA). During his stay at UC, he delivered two seminars, organized by AQUIQÁN. The seminar “Mixed-integer programming models for planning and scheduling for Enterprise-wide optimization”, took place on May 23rd, 2019. The second one, entitled “Optimization of process systems under uncertainty”, took place on May 24th, 2019.

Ecodesign Exhibition

Students of the Master in Chemical Engineering who follow the course Life Cycle Assessment of Processes and Products showed their works in the hall of the ETSIIT of the University of Cantabria, last May 24th, 2019. The students used eco-design strategies and tools in their propose new eco-designed products.

Conference: Prof. Inmaculada Ortiz

Prof. Inmaculada Ortiz Uribe took part in the cycle of conferences “Ciencia para todos” organized by the Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences, with the seminar “El valor de los residuos y el paradigma de la economía circular”. The conference has been taught on April 20, 2019 in the Main Hall of RAC in Madrid, on May 13, 2019 in the Main Hall of the Club de Prensa Asturiana in Oviedo and on May 14, 2019 in the “Casa de las Ciencias” in Logroño.

Academic Visit

Students of 4º ESO of the Atalaya School visited the Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Department. Elena Manteca and Gema Pérez welcomed them and organized two experimental activities that students developed during the whole morning, last May 17th, 2019. One experiment activity consisted on the removal of cupper from a wastewater sample by applying ion exchange technology. In the second experiment the students experimented the chromatographic separation principles by doing an experiment using cromatography paper and also they watched how an ion cromatograph works.

Academic Visit

Students of the Chemical Engineering Degree who follow the courses Wastewater Treatment, European Project Semester and Advanced Separation Processes, and the Faculty members Raquel Ibáñez, Eugenio Bringas, Marcos Fallanza and Guillermo Díaz visited the WWTP located at San Román and the Drinking water treatment Plant located in Prezanes, last May 17th, 2019.

The students had the opportunity to observe conventional and advanced technologies for the sanitation of urban and industrial wastewaters.

University of Cantabria Open Doors Day

The University of Cantabria organized the day “Feria informativa UC”, on May 10th, 2019. The aim of the event is to show the academic offer of the University of Cantabria to prospective students. During the event the 29 degrees and the 3 doubles degrees were presented. Raquel Ibáñez, Eugenio Bringas and Marcos Fallanza were in charge of explaining to the audience the academic levels in the field of Chemical Engineering, from the degree to the doctorate program.

National Chemistry Olympiad 2019

Last May 10—12, 2019 the XXXII National Chemistry Olympiad took place in Santander. A total 118 students coming from all over Spain participated in the contest. The event was organized  by the Cantabria Territorial Section of the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry (RSEQ) in On Sunday, the ceremony award was chaired by the Conselour of Education, Culture and Sports of the Government of Cantabria, Mr. Francisco Fernández Mañanes; the Vice Chancellor of Doctorate and Institutional Relations of the University of Cantabria, Mr. Alberto Ruiz;  the head of the Organizing Committee of the Olympics, Ms. Clara Casado, and other representatives of the academic instiutions.

Chemistry Miniolympiad 2019

Last May 10, 2019 the V Chemistry Miniolympiad took place in Cantabria. 103 ESO students 3rd and 4th levels attended the event, that was organized by the Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Association of Cantabria (AQUIQÁN-ANQUE) in collaboration with the Cantabria Territorial Section of the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry (RSEQ). In this edition the winners were:

Short Research Stay

Vítor Ramiro de Almeida Fernandes, researcher in the Laboratório Nacional de Energia e Geologia (LNEG, Portugal) visited the Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Department of the University of Cantabria, from May 6 to 10, 2019. During the stay, he worked in the development of new and highly efficient catalysts and membranes for fuel cell and electrolizer systems, under the supervision of Alfredo Ortiz. This visit was possible thanks to the european project PEMFC-SUDOE in which both institutions are involved.
