Research Stay at UC: Johanna Bonnays

Johanna Bonnays, from the University of Nantes, is currently developing a research stay at the Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Department of the University of Cantabria under the supervision of Dr. Marcos Fallanza. During this period, from May 31st to August 28th, 2021, she will work the synthesis of composite membranes in hollow fiber configuration and their application for the recovery of alcohols from complex aqueous mixtures by pervaporation. This research stay is performed in the frame of the Erasmus programme.

Research Stay at UC: María José Martín de Vidales Calvo

Dr. María José Martín de Vidales Calvo, Associate Professor of the Chemical Engineering Degree, at the School of Industrial Engineering and Design of the Polytechnic University of Madrid, and belonging to the research group of Analysis and Optical Characterization of Materials, is currently developing a research internship in the PAS research group at the Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Department of the University of Cantabria (UC). This stay, from June 1 to July 31, 2021, is performed in the frame of the grants for short stays of researchers from other institutions at the UC and it is focus on the wastewater treatment through several advanced oxidation processes of high scientific and industrial interest.

PhD. Thesis Defense: Guillermo Díaz

Guillermo Díaz defended his doctorate thesis “Electrochemical CO2 utilization: Development of a continuous process for obtaining formate with high efficiency”, developed in the Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Department of the University of Cantabria, under the supervision of Prof. Ángel Irabien and Dr. Manuel Álvarez. The academic event took place on May 31st, 2021, and the evaluation committee was formed by Prof. Inmaculada Ortiz (University of Cantabria), Dr. Jose Solla (University of Alicante) and Dr. Carlos Sánchez (Sorbonne University).

Conference: Prof. Rony Snyder

Prof. Rony Snyders, Chimie des Interactions Plasma-Surface (ChIPS), Université de Mons (Belgium delivered the talk “Spheres, films, wires, tubes… how can plasma be used to design nanomaterials?”. The event took place virtually through Teams app on June 7th, 2021 and it was organized in the frame of the Doctorate in Chemical Engineering, Energy and Processes of the University of Cantabria.

Internship: Gonzalo Moral Real

Gonzalo Moral, student of the Master in Chemical Engineering, is developing a curricular internship in the Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Department of the University of Cantabria under the supervision of Prof. Inmaculada Ortiz and Dr. Alfredo Ortiz.

Congress: IMIL 2021

Alfredo Ortiz, Carla Arregoitia and Salvador Asensio Delgado attended the Iberoamerican Meeting on Ionic Liquids (IMIL 2021) celebrated virtually on May 24-26, 2021 and organized by the University of  Santiago de Chile. They presented the works:

“Copolymerization strategies of protic ionic liquids for their application as electrolyte membranes in fuel cells”

“Addition of IL to hollow fiber membranes for improving the recovery of butanol by pervaporation”

 “Using the Regular Solution Theory to select ionic liquids for the separation of fluorinated refrigerant gases”.

PhD. Thesis Defense: Juan Corredor Ortega

Juan Corredor defended his doctorate thesis “New strategies in the generation of photocatalytic hydrogen”, developed in the Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering Department of the University of Cantabria under the supervision of Prof. Inmaculada Ortiz and Dr. María José Rivero. The academic defense took place on June 4th, 2021, through Microsoft Teams app. The evalution committee was formed by Prof. Ane Urtiaga (University of Cantabria), Ms. Carmen Rangel (LNEG) and Prof. José Antonio Casas (Autonomous University of Madrid).

Dr. Alba Romano

Dr. Alba Romano former PhD student of the Chemical, Process and Energy doctorate program (supervisors: Pros. Ortiz Uribe and Urtiaga Mendía) will join Inovyn Company at Rosignano (Italy) on June 1, 2021 as Chlor Alkali Senior R&D Scientist.
