CONGRESS: HYMA 2017

Last March 6-10, 2017, Carolina Fernández attended the 5th international Conference on Multifunctional, Hybrid and Nanomaterials – HYMA 2017, celebrated in Lisbon, Portugal, where she presented the work developed in collaboration with the Georgia Institute of Technology and University of Sydney, entitled “Enhancing the performance of polyethylene based anion exchange membranes using functionalized iron oxide nanoparticles and oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes: mechanism and comparison between nanomaterials”.

RESEARCH STAY: Prof. Inmaculada Ortiz – March – May 2017

Prof. Inmaculada Ortiz is currently performing a research stay at the Chemical Engineering Department of the Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh, USA). During this period, March to May 2017, she will work with Prof. Ignacio Grossmann (Doctor Honoris Causa of the University of Cantabria)  in the area of  optimization of advanced separtion processes  based on the use of highly selective functionalized nano-materials.

CONFERENCE: Dr. Félix LLóvell – March 8th, 2017

Last March 8th, 2017, Dr. Félix Llóvell, from the Instituto Químico de Sarrià, Universitat Ramon Llull, Tarragona, taugh the lecture “The extended soft-SAFT equation of state: a thermodynamic modeling tool for an accurate description of fluids and mixtures”, at the conference room of the ETSIIyT of the University of Cantabria. The event was organized by Máster en Ingeniería Química y Programa de Doctorado en Ingeniería Química, de la Energía y de Procesos.

NEW STAFF: Jose Castanedo – February 2017

The student of the master´s degree in Chemical Engineering (UC-UPV/EHU), Jose Castanedo joined the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department, to perform a curricular internship. He will work in the collaborative project between the department (PI: Inmaculada Ortiz Uribe) and Santander Coated Solutions Company “Desarrollo de recubrimientos funcionalizados con nanopartículas de grafeno para laminados prelacados con elevada resistencia a la corrosión”. Jose will work under the supervision of Dr. María José Rivero.

RESEARCH INTERNSHIP: Sara Domínguez – February – May 2017

The PhD. student Sara Domínguez is currently performing a research stay at the Nanocatalysis & Photoreactions Engineering Group of the Department of Chemical Engineering, at Loughborough University (United Kingdom) under the supervision of Prof. Gianluca Li Puma.

During her stay, from February 19th to May 5th, 2017, Sara will work in the knowledge area of mathematical model for photocatalytic reactors for emerging pollutants removal from wastewaters.

CORNELL PROGRAMME – February 2nd, 2017

Last February 2nd, 2017 we received the visit of Stephen Capobianco, Educational Abroad Advisor in Cornell University (New York, USA). Mr. Capobianco was welcomed by Prof. Ana María Urtiaga (Assistant Director of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering), Dr. Raquel Ibañez (Vice-Dean of the School of Industrial and Telecomunication Engineering) and Dr. Eugenio Bringas (International Relation Coordinator in the area of Chemical Engineering). The meeting was a fruitful opportunity to analyze the benefits and opportunities of the international programme that allows the bilateral exchange of undergraduate chemical engineering students between Cornell University and the University of Cantabria.

G9 DOCTORATE DAYS – February 2017

Carolina Fernández was selected by the University of Cantabria to attend to the V Jornadas Doctorales del Grupo G9 as PhD student in Engineering. This annual meeting, hosted in 2017 by Universidad de las Islas Baleares in Palma de Mallorca, took place on February 8th – 10th, 2017. Carolina really enjoyed the experience of meeting other PhD students of diverse areas of knowledge such as Medicine, Mathematics, Psychology, Law, History and Literature. She recommends PhD students of the department to participate next year as it is a very interesting and unique experience during the PhD.

INTERNATIONAL DAY «WOMEN AND GIRLS IN SCIENCE» – February 11th, 2017

The Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department of the University of Cantabria supports the celebration of the International Women’s and Girls’ Day in Science to motivate the participation of young students in science.

Women of the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department participated in the International Day of Women and Girls in Science through recording some videos for Atalaya School in Santander, encouraging girls to be interested in Science.
