The project will increase the energy efficiency of the desalination process, will promote the generation of renewable energy from brine and will transform it into chemicals to be employed in the desalination process itself.<br><br>Within the framework of the project, a semi-industrial pilot unit for demonstration will be designed and built that will be operated in the desalination plant facilities of San Pedro del Pinatar-II (Murcia, Spain), working under representative full-scale conditions, and thus facilitating its further implementation on a larger scale.<br><br>LIFE INDESAL, co-financed by the LIFE Programme of the European Commission, is coordinated by ACCIONA, Water business, and has the collaboration of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering of the University of Cantabria (Spain), with long history in energy and material recovery from liquid and gaseous residual effluents; APRIA Systems, a spin-off from the University of Cantabria with experience in advanced separation technologies for the treatment and recovery of different streams; REDstack BV, a Dutch company focused on developing and commercialising electro-membrane stacks and processes for Reverse Electrodialysis, Electrodialysis and related applications; and REVOLVE, a Belgian entity with extensive experience in communication within the water sector.<br>&nbsp;<br>LIFE INDESAL (LIFE21-ENV-ES-101074444) is co-funded by the European Union.
