The Marquises of Comillas.
The Coteruca   The main art patron in the town was the indiano Antonio López y López, whose economic and social ascent was unstoppable since his return from Cuba and establishment of his business in Barcelona, which ended with the granting by Alfonso XII of the title of Marquis of his hometown (Comillas) in 1878, to recognise his economic support in the fight against Cuban insurrection. From here onwards, the figure of the Marquis represented the town of Comillas.

At the beginning, those properties of the members of the Marquis's circle were considered some of the best architectural works in the town. The central nucleus, a kind of town-garden, included the houses of Ocejo (Don Antonio López's first residence), La Portilla, El Llano and La Cavaduca, built between 1860 and 1880. These residences, still fairly unadorned, lacked the exotic style which characterised later constructions. In this period, the picturesque Coteruca was also built, in contrast with the sobriety of the residences at that time.
