The Baroque.
House of Tagle. (Santillana del Mar)   However, the full development of the casona took place in the Baroque period. Therefore, in the second half of the 17th century and throughout all the 18th, many casonas were built in Cantabria. The twenty years between 1700 and 1720 were crucial for the building of most of them, which were also the best. Many of their promoters were soldiers who having fought with Philip V in the War of the Spanish Succession, were in the privileged position of winners. This fact coincided with the arrival of capital from the indianos in these twenty years of building activity. One of the numerous examples of 18th century casona indiana is the casona of Tagle in Santillana del Mar. Other promoters were nobles who occupied important posts in the government or in the Church, frequently outside Cantabria, (Castile, Andalusia, America...). These were bishops, Inquisitors, soldiers or court clerks who, being outside the region, knew the new artistic trends and reflected them in the construction of their casona in Cantabria. Thus, these were often the responsible for the appearance of new styles in Cantabria. The sepulchral monument of Don Lorenzo de Rugama in the chapel of his casona in Bárcena de Cicero represents one of these personages who prompted these buildings, in this case an eminent navel man.
