Cantabria is located in the center of the cantabrian coast, flanked by Asturias to the west and the Basque Country to the East. Orographically it is a montanious area, this fact made it to be known traditionally as "La Montaña" (The mountain). The altitude on the areas close to the sea do not exceed 600 meters, and it is in this narrow strip where the ensembles with palaeolithic rock art are situated. On the South of this strip we will find a natural border of high mountains, "Picos de Europa", shared with Asturias and Castilla y León, with altituds greater than 2000 meters, while to the East it blends into the Basque Countrys in the "Encartaciones" area.

The palaeolithic rock art that we know today in Cantabria is always located in caves. However, there is the possibility that rocky surfaces on open air could have been decorated, as it occurs in other parts of the Iberian Peninsula: FOZ COA , SIEGA VERDE or DOMINGO GARCIA.
