The history of the discoveries can be separated in several periods. The work done since 1902 until the outbreack of the second world war, was very useful. Among others, in this period, caves such as Altamira, El Castillo, La Pasiega, Hornos de la Peņa, Covalanas, La Haza... were studied. After a critical period for the investigation, made by in the middle 50s, scientists return to work over the studies made by the first investigators. Again ,at the end of the 70s, with the creation of the area of Prehistory of the department of Historical Sciences of the University of Cantabria, the intensity of the first works is becoming stronger, with the study of new locations. Nowadays, investigators for the University of Cantabria are making a research about cave art on Arco, Pondra, La Llosa, La Pasiega and La Garma.
