Teaching Innovation Award from the Social Council of the Universidad de Cantabria
GEURBAN research group has received the Teaching Innovation Award from the Social Council of the Universidad de Cantabria with the project entitled "Aprendizaje Participative learning 3.0 application of the PBL methodology according to a multi-stakeholder approach in urban planning". This award recognises the individual and collective effort of the teaching staff of the University of Cantabria in the generation and implementation of innovative actions in teaching. The project carried out by GEURBAN updates the project-based learning methodology applied to urban planning by including 2 participatory processes in the development of the course project of the subject Urban Planning and Urban Infrastructures. The first corresponds to the site analysis phase involving citizens and vulnerable groups and the second is related to the planning and urbanisation proposal phase, with the participation of technicians and urban planning experts.

New Special issue on Sustainability about Urban planning and Autonomous Vehicles
Dear all, the members of GEURBAN are happy to announce a Call for Special Issue about "Moving towards Sustainable Cities. Urban Planning and Policies for the Autonomous Mobility Age". This Special Issue aims to contribute to the theoretical and empirical knowledge supporting academic research and professional and policy maker's practice to better understand and address future urban planning challenges associated with the rise of Autonomous mobility. Papers form the urban, transport, economic or social fields are very welcome. Submission deadline is extended until 31st December 2022. Additional information is available at the following link:

New academic paper by GEURBAN published in Science of the Total Environment
Óscar Silva, Rubén Cordera, Esther González-González and Soledad Nogués, members of GEURBAN, have just published a new academic paper in the well-known international journal Science of the Total Enviornment.
The paper, entitled "Environmental impacts of autonomous vehicles: A review of the scientific literature", performs a comprehensive review of the expected environmental impacts of Autonomous Vehicles on air, land, water, noise & light pollution. Available at:

New academic paper by GEURBAN published in Land Use Policy
Soledad Nogués, Rubén Cordera and Esther González-González, members of GEURBAN, have recenty published, April 2020, a new academic paper in the well-known international journal Land Use Policy.
The paper, entitled "New urban planning challenges under emerging autonomous mobility: evaluating backcasting scenarios and policies through an expert survey", deals with the opinions and evaluations of experts from the planning field, about the potential impacts of Autonomous Vehicles in the city and the effectiveness of planning policy measures and packages to guide their implementation. New academic paper by GEURBAN in Land Use Policy
Esther González-González and Soledad Nogués, members of GEURBAN, together with Dr. Dominic Stead from the Faculty of Architecture at TUDelft, have recently published an academic paper in the well-known international journal Land Use Policy.
The paper is titled "Parking futures: Preparing European Cities for the advent of automated vehicles". The paper focus on the opportunities and threats of the implementation of Automated Vehicles and identifies a set of critical policy and planning measures to be taken before AVs arrival in order to achieve a more sustainable, desirable, attractive and high-quality cities. Soledad Nogués, chairwoman at the Scientific Comitee of the IX International Congress for Spatial Planning (CIOT)
Soledad Nogués, Director of GEURBAN chaired the session titled: "Los retos de las ciudades y territorios ante las nuevas economías, la disrupción tecnológica y las nuevas formas de movilidad" of the 9th International Congress for Spatial Planning "Planificación y gestión integrada como respuesta", held on 13th to 15th March 2019 in Santander (Cantabria). The congress was organized by FUNDICOT (Asociación Interprofesional de Ordenación del Territorio) and the Department for Universities and Research, Envirnoment and Social Policy of the Government of Cantabria, with the support of the University of Cantabria. GEURBAN takes part on Seminar "Una nueva ordenación urbanística para Cantabria"
Next July 11th 2018 Seminar titled "Una nueva ordenación urbanística para Cantabria" will be held in Casa de Cultura of Torrelavega (Cantabria), organized by the Summer courses of University of Cantabria and Government of Cantabria. In this seminar, Soledad Nogués, Director of GEURBAN, will give the talk "Nuevos enfoques del Planeamiento", and participate in a roundtable along with Francisco González Buendía, Director-General for Urbanism of the Government of Cantabria, and other academics, public administrators and professionals.
Esther González González, researh memeber of GEURBAN, gave the seminar "Autonomous vehicles & the city of tomorrow" at the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment of the Delft University of Technology (The Netherlands)
Last 6th March 2018 Esther González González, member of GEURBAN, gave a seminar titled "Autonomous vehicles & the city of tomorrow", in the prestigious Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment of the Delft University of Technology (The Netherlands). This seminar was one of the activities as guest researcher of the Spatial Planning and Strategy section of the Department of Urbanism of this Faculty. The seminar dealt with the potential impacts of Autonomous Vehicles on urban form and land use and provided first insights about planning and policy strategies to deliver desirable patterns of development. A part of this research, co-authored with Soledad Nogués and Dominic Stead, will be presented at AESOP Annual Congress, to be held next July 10-14 in Gothenburg (Sweden).

Quercus award Soledad Nogués, Director of GEURBAN, "Torrelaveguense Ilustre 2016"
Last 25th November 2016, Quercus a Public opinion group from Torrelavega, awarded Soledad Nogués, Professor of Urban and Spatial Planning of the University of Cantabria, and Director of GEURBAN, as Distinguished Citizen "Torrelaveguense Ilustre 2016", in recognition of her professional career in the field of urban and spatial planning, especially related to several relevant projects about Torrelavega, her native town, and its region, Besaya River Basin. Those works have been focused on the urban planning history and evolution of this town, the significance of the county's relevant industrial activity in the urban and spatial planning of the region, the socio-economic and environemntal recovery of the region...

GEURBAN celebrated a technical seminar on "Strategies for the environmental recovery of the Lower Besaya river Basin"
On 17th December 2014, the Research Group for Urban Studies and Regional Planning along with several researchers from the Water Science and Techniques Department of the University of Cantabria, organized a Technical Seminar coordinated by its Director, Soledad Nogués, and chair by the Regional Department for Environment, Regional and Urban Planning of the Government of Cantabria. The theme of the workshop was the presentation of the main results of the project "Establishment of strategies for the environmental and socio-economic recovery and Lower Besaya river Basin", known as "Besaya 2020" and its second phase "Scientific-technical reports for various projects, plans and actions in the Lower Besaya river Basin, focused on the environmental and socio-economic recovery of the area". This seminar was held in the Centre of Environmental Research (CIMA) in Torrelavega.

On 25th October 2010 two GEURBAN members, Pedro Gómez Portilla, as General Director of Urbanism of the Government of Cantabria, and Luis Sáiz González, were invited to partipate in a round table organized by the Cantabrian Institution of Civil Engineers. The discussion addresed the common problems on Urban Planning practice in Cantabria and its relationship to the strict Regional Law of Soil 2/2001.

GEURBAN celebrated a technical conference on the "Assessment of the effects of high capacity roads"
On 24th September 2010 the Research Group for Urban Studies and Regional Planning of the University of Cantabria, coordinated by its Director, Soledad Nogués, organized a Technical Seminar on "Evaluation of the effects of high capacity roads". This workshop, was held at the School of Civil Engineers of Santander, and was attended by national and international renowned experts on the subject, such as Tony May (ITS - University of Leeds), and by regional and country Administration representatives.
Transport policy is a fundamental element in strengthening economic and social cohesion of the territories, however, investment in transport infrastructure does not always get the desired effects. In relation to this, this workshop addressed the effects of transportation networks, mainly of high capacity roads in the socio-economic, territorial, environmental and mobility enviroments, with emphasis on methods to assess such effects as useful instruments for decision making in infrastructure planning.
This academic interdisciplinary Workshop was aimed at discussing and exchanging ideas and opinions among experts from civil engineering and other related disciplines, as well as companies and institutions involved in this area.

Pedro Ángel Gómez Portilla took office as the new General Director of Urbanism of the Government of Cantabria
On 3rd August 2007, Pedro Ángel Gómez Portilla, Professor of Urban and Spatial Planning of the University of Cantabria and GEURBAN research fellow, took office as new General Director of Urbanism of the Government of Cantabria.
