Palace of Rugama (Bárcena de Cicero) |
South of Siete
Villas Junta lies the old-style Cesto Junta
which comprised the districts of Bárcena de Cicero,
Hazas de Cesto and Solórzano. The district of
Bárcena de Cicero is rich in lay and religious
heritage. Its churches bear the mark of the arrival of
Renaissance novelties to Cantabria (churches of Adal,
Ambrosero, Cicero...); all of them contain important
examples of Cantabrian altarpieces. As for lay
architecture, there are interesting casonas all
over the district and 17th and 18th century palaces;
notably in Bárcena de Cicero where the casonas and
palaces of Colina, Rugama, Londoño,
Arredondo, Valle Rozadilla, Sevil Santelices stand, among
others. In Hazas de Cesto one should point out the church of St James in Praves, in the Vía neighbourhood: clearly it is an allusion to the coastal route to Santiago, erected as it is on the site of an earlier such church documents show existed in the 18th century. The church of Beranga is 17th century; it presents an interesting mannerist façade; opposite is the house-palace of Villa, built on the site of an earlier medieval tower. In the district of Solórzano there is the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fresnedo, of Gothic origin, built on the site of an earlier hermitage. The Voto Junta, situated at the southernmost tip of Trasmiera, is the birthplace of the most important stonemasons of Trasmiera, and possesses a very valuable architecture, both religious and lay. Of the former there are examples pertaining to the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries (San Bartolomé de los Montes, Secadura, Bádames, Carasa, Rada, Padiérniga, nates, San Mamés de Aras...); almost all of them have important 17th and 18th century altarpieces. Lay architecture is similarly of an exceptional quality, there being casonas and palaces with coats of arms of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Of these, we would note the casona of Cerecedo. |
